A permanent solution to the energy needs

I feel that our country can be self-sufficient in energy using only natural sources of energy. Our high altitude blessed reservoirs  can be used as energy storage cells. In our country, in addition to existing reservoirs there are a number of areas where new reservoirs can be constructed to support the potential energy storage. We can temporarily store variable natural energy in our reservoirs. The natural sources of energy that we have are,

1. Hydro power
2. Wind power (in the near future, wind power will mainly be obtained from kites)
3. The power obtained by sea waves
4. The power obtained by using solar electricity

The future of power generation is wind power and solar power. Sri Lanka owns a large number of reservoirs that can be used as energy storage in the national grid. Apart from existing reservoirs and hydroelectric power stations, we can build new reservoirs with small storage capacity (per week for power generation), but large generation capacity.

We can pump up water when we have excess wind and solar energy. Then we can use hydroelectric power at night when there is peak demand for electricity.

Eg: Water is pumped up during the day from Rantembe  -> Randenigala -> Victoria.

Creating a small solar system in every home is very expensive, technically limited (only 15% -20% of the transformer capacity can be supplied by rooftop solar generators). The cost of electricity is far more expensive than the concessionary price quoted by the Ceylon Electricity Board for households using less than 90 units per month . The Ceylon Electricity Board now get an income from customers who consuming more than 180 units per month. If all customers who use over 180 units will have their own solar system and pay no bill, the Ceylon Electricity Board will go bankrupt.

Instead CEB should issue Household Energy Certificates for a 20+ year investor plan. And then all these investments should go to set up larger solar power plants that spans over the highways, canals or floating over sea (or reservoirs).

Example: A household unit consuming 300 units per month (a monthly bill of Rs. 9000/=) invests six lakhs investment plan and gets free energy of 300 units for 20 years.

On the other hand around Rs. 300,000 investment is sufficient to generate 300 units by a massive solar, wind or kite power station. Moreover future kite wind power plants are the most cost effective and will produce stable energy with the our blessed monsoon winds.

To make the best use of the investment from the energy industry the government should take necessary steps to,

1. Solar panels needs to be manufactured by the state sponsored local factories
2. Domestic investors should be encouraged to generate electricity from kites
3. Domestic investors should be encouraged to generate electricity from sea waves
